As Kids, We Think We Can Do Anything.

As time goes by, the world closes in on us, and we hear voices say “we can’t”. We hear that we are not good enough, that we are no good at this or that, that we should stay in our lane and not try new things, especially if they are big steps.

We hear that the world is dangerous and what can happen if we step out of line. We learn to fear failure and let it stop us.

We create a self image out of all of this. A self-concept that “this is who I am,” and along with that, “this is who I am not.” Once that happens, most of us live our days believing it and behaving according to it, even if it is self-limiting.

For a while, it may work out. But for man,y you feel something is missing. Something is not right. You are unfulfilled. Many adults suffer from ADD – Adventure Deficit Disorder.

It’s not a bad idea to do things that for you, are “out of your box”. Try new things. Don’t be afraid to look silly or be a novice again, even though you are used to being an expert at who you have been being and what you have been doing for so long.

Tell you kids “You can do anything you really want to do and put your mind to.” Then tell yourself the same.

Ask “What do I REALLY want?” Because desire is the starting point of all achievement. Without a desire to do a thing, it is impossible for you. With a strong desire, nothing is impossible.

Replace Air Filters On Things That Have Air Filters!

Let’s Start With Your Furnace.

You might think a furnace has air filters to clean the air in your house. While that is true, the key reason is to keep dust out of the furnace.

A furnace and especially an air conditioner has lots of surfaces in there that exchange heat. That is to say, when air goes over a hot surface, it becomes warm. When air goes over a cold surface, it becomes cool. When a furnace filter is dirty it reduces air flow and lets dust get through into the furnace/AC. Dust is an insulator, and when the surfaces the air goes over are dusty and dirty, the efficiency goes down.

What is efficiency?

Think of it as how much benefit do I get for how much money. The furnace or air conditioner only costs you money when it is running – and it will have to run longer if the filter is dirty and/or the heat exchange surfaces inside it are dirty.

If the filter is completely plugged, it can damage an air conditioning system. So, change that air filter regularly!

Our dehumidifiers are the same.

Dehumidifiers are air conditioners that put the heat back into the same space rather than outside. They have lots of nooks and crannies for heat exchange.

Keeping the filter clean will keep it working well with high efficiency. We recommend once a year. We can do it when we come for annual maintenance on your system.

The filter stack should be changed once per year. If you don’t do it, they will continue to clog, block air flow, and not work well.

Your Home Harvest’s Water

Your roof keeps the rain off of you and your family. It’s pitched and gathers all the rain and concentrates it in a small area. One inch of rain on an average 2,200 square foot roof amounts to 1,550 gallons of water! That’s 12,400 pounds of water! Management of that water is very important – you don’t want it in the soil around your foundation to put pressure on your walls, cause settling, and have your sump pump have to pump it all out. I Am A Fan Of Well-Run Businesses.

They provide all the goods and services we need to live a high standard of living. But some businesses aren’t run well.

This is particularly true in home improvement. Since I train home improvement contractors from all over the country today, I know the reasons.

Most don’t know how to run a business. They started as someone doing the work or selling it and then started their own business. I Was 30 Years Old When We Had Our First Child – A Boy We Named Tanner.

Tanner was always a very good learner. Science and math were his strong subjects. But like me, in high school, he started to check out, not seeing the direct relevance of everything he was learning to what he saw himself doing.

Luckily, I passed on the habit of listening to audiobooks whenever we drove anywhere, and of reading books that interested me. Like me, he didn’t go to college; now I see it would have only slowed him down.

He is 30 years old now. This year, he read or listened to 109 books!

Years ago, I gave him a challenge. Develop the world’s most efficient dehumidifier. “Efficient” means the most water out of the air for the least electricity. He threw himself into the project. He built testing chambers, studied refrigeration and thermodynamics and so many other things. He built 69 prototypes, changing compressors or other components to see what the effect was. After two years, he did it. And today, we dry 16,000 basements or crawl spaces a year using the SaniDry Sedona he developed.

Now that he had experience in product design and development, Tanner needed a new challenge. This time he assigned it to himself. Some months went by and I knew he had been working on something new. “What is it?” I asked. Eventually, he revealed he was designing an air purifier. Tanner has allergies. Electromechanical devices. If you have one and it fails, you will have a flood when it rains hard – and that is just what you wanted to avoid when you hired us.

Years ago when I started in the basement waterproofing business, I joined an association for the industry and got to know other basement waterproofing contractors from around the country.

I learned that when they do work for a homeowner, they never want to hear from them again. “Why?” I asked. “Because if you hear from them, they must have a problem!”

A phone call from a previous customer was bad news. I guess they were hoping that the customer would forget about them and lose their phone number after they worked for them.

I knew this was not a good attitude for me to adopt as I was thinking long-term. Not only did I not want customers to forget about me, I didn’t want them to have problems – ever!

A phone call from a customer who spent good money with us and is standing in water is not a good call – understandably so.

This is why I invented products such as our TripleSafe Sump pump system, IceGuard, our own battery-backup system called UltraSump, and so much more. Forks In The Road Of Life

Sometimes It’s A Chance Meeting Of Someone That Changes The Course Of Our Lives.

Sometimes it’s a “failure” that happens that starts something big and wonderful. Sometimes it’s a spark of an idea that we turn toward that alters everything.

You don’t want to be stressed out trying and have no time to relax or be spontaneous.
Life is like that. Each day is filled with new and unpredictable encounters. Most are nothing, and a few are mighty seeds of your future. Which are what we have a lot of control over.

College was never talked about in my family. No one in my family had ever gone to college and there was no money anyway. I went to a technical high school and was in the carpentry class. When I graduated high school I put an ad in the newspaper – “Carpentry, call Larry. No job too small.” I got calls, showed up, and did lots of repairs and installations; porches railings, decks, windows, roofing, small additions, tile work…

One year in, at age 18 I got a call. “Can you build a house for me?” It was 1983 and there was a building boom going on.

Here is the big fork – this moment.

So, me at 18 years old, my friend at 17 years old, and my little brother Rick who was on summer vacation at just 14 years old built that house – a 3,000-square-foot contemporary.

We showed up every day and worked until dark for 6 weeks. We framed it, and put in the windows and doors, siding, roofing, and decks.

My diligence was noticed and the neighbors who owed the lots on the left and on the right wanted me to build their homes too – and I did. Over the course of 5 years I built 23 homes, and I learned a lot. But alas, the building boom turned to a bust, and banks were not lending anymore in 1987. The last home I built has a shrinkage crack in the foundation wall that was leaking. I had to figure out how to repair it.

Another big fork in the road. Here we go. It wasn’t easy to figure things out back then as it is today. There was no Google, no YouTube…but I did it. I had to figure out what I’d do next. I couldn’t build any more houses because they were not selling. Hmmm, maybe other people have problems with leaks in their basements….and boom. I’m in the basement waterproofing business!

That was 1987. A long time ago. And when you do something for so long, you figure a lot of things out and get pretty good at it. The business was quite primitive back then. Today I have 32 patents on products I have developed to make things better for our customers. I have a great team of people who have stayed with me for many years. It’s one of my greatest joys.

I have seen other companies and characters come and go from our industry. And we are still here, getting better and better all the time.

We have long since expanded to bring our way of thinking and brand of business to other services – crawl spaces, foundation repair, air purification, insulation, basement finishing, roofing, gutters, and more.

I’m 60 years old now. I love my work and leading my people.

A Winning Schedule

How I Manage My Time

There is so much to do and so many things to pay attention to. There isn’t enough time in the day to do it all.

You don’t want to be stressed out trying and have no time to relax or be spontaneous.
So here’s the secret – decide what is MOST important to you. What activities are of the MOST value?

Then do those FIRST. There will be many other things to do that will NOT get done, and resolve to be ok with that.

The highest performers don’t have more time in a day, and aren’t running around faster than others – they are just doing higher-value things than most people.

The other idea is to guard your attention. We live in an attention economy – everyone is trying to get your attention, eyeballs, time, likes, views, and money. Decide what is most important to you and pay attention to that, and ignore the rest. Your phone is a “weapon of mass distraction”. Delete apps, shut off notifications, and put “do not disturb” on.

I keep an old-school paper calendar book. I use the Jim Rohn planner. It works for me. Each day I write the most important things at the top of the page for the day. I put a rectangle around appointments or meetings that I can’t miss. I put phone calls I have to make at the bottom of each page. I write in different colored ink to make it easier to distinguish between items. When something is done I use a yellow highlighter on it.

I always work on the most important things in the morning. The afternoons I reserve for calls, talking to people, meetings, and transactional work. I do the creative work first when my brain is fresh.

I have dealers for my products all over North America and partners (who are contractors like me) in 35 states. This way of managing my time ensures I don’t drop any balls and I’m not stressed out. I haven’t worked a weekend in 30 years and have plenty of family time!

Time management is about:

Decide what is most important to you
NOT Trying To Do It All – I’m ok with missing things because I am doing what I love
Not saying yes to everything – Say no so you can be better at what you do say yes to
Schedule the most important high-value things and do them first
Guard your time and attention – Life = Time.

Why Some Rooms Are Colder (Or Hotter) Than Others

I Am A Building Scientist.

This means I study and understand how heat and moisture flow through buildings. It’s been a pretty cool thing to learn because we can explain the root cause of problems in homes to people – and often these problems have mystified everyone else for years. We get to be the heroes – and being the hero is fun.

I started a part of our company called Dr. Energy Saver in 2009. Since then we have saved millions and millions of dollars in annual fuel and electric cost for heating and cooling for our homeowners in CT and NY, and for people all across America through the contractor dealers that we recruited and trained.

So think about the one room that is always cold in the winter in your home. (Or you might think of the room that is always hot in the summer. The problem is the same just in reverse.) Here is what I know already. That room is NOT the one with the thermostat – right?

The thermostat is the brain of the heating system. The furnace (or boiler) is a slave to it. When the temperature drops below the temperature you have it set for, it calls down to the furnace – “Hey we need some heat – turn on”.

When the temperature gets to the set point, the thermostat calls down to the furnace again – “Hey we are warm enough, turn off.”

What this means is that no matter what is going on in the room with the thermostat, it’s always comfortable there. So, what about the rooms without the thermostat?

Well, for those rooms, it is a simple matter of BTU’s in, and BTU’s out. A BTU (British Thermal Unit) is about the same amount of heat in a wooden kitchen match. Your furnace’s size is expressed in BTU’s – such as “80,000 BTUs per hour”. In short, BTU is a unit of heat.

In a hot air heating system those heat units are delivered via the distribution of warm air from the furnace into the room. In any given room you need to balance the units of heat it needs to stay comfortable with the units of heat you are delivering.

If you do not have enough warm air going into a room necessary to keep it comfortable, then the thermostat will tell the furnace to shut off when the area with the thermostat gets up to the thermostat set temperature, but before the problem room does. That’s pretty easy to understand, and we can fix that.

In some cases, it may be very simple. For example, let’s say someone closed the registers one day and no one ever opened them. So – open them. Or if you have floor registers and someone put a throw rug over the register or a box or a piece of furniture. So – move it and let the warm air into the room.

In other cases, it may be that there is not a return duct into the room. Most bedrooms do not return ducts. There is a big return duct in the ceiling in the hallway, but not in the bedroom. This is ok when the bedroom door is open because the doorway IS the return air path. And for every cubic foot of air that gets sucked out of a room via the return, a new cubic foot of heated air from the ductwork is allowed to come into the room, bringing more heat.

The problem is when you close the bedroom door. There’s an old joke amongst building scientists. Your daughter Jenny’s room was comfortable until she got to be a teenager and started closing her door at night – then her room was cold.

To solve the problem jumper ducts or transfer grills can be installed to get the cooler air that’s in the room out, so more heat can go in from the supply ducts.

When it comes to colder rooms, there is another thing we look at too. What is causing the rooms to be cold? Is it a corner bedroom with two exterior walls instead of one like other bedrooms? Is there a lot of glass? Is the duct that gets the warm air there leaky or crushed or disconnected in the attic? Are there big air leaks in that room like from can lights in the ceiling or a knee wall space like in a Cape Cod home? Something else?

By stopping the heat from leaking out if we can, we can change the balance of heat units between the room with the thermostat and the problem room.

We need to lower the heating load in the problem room and/or steal heat units from the room with the thermostat so that both areas get up to a comfortable temperature at the same time.

It’s the same for rooms that are too hot in the summer, just in reverse. We need to get more heat units OUT of the problem room so it cools the same as the room with the thermostat. It’s amazing that almost no HVAC contractors consider all these factors when hearing a complaint of a room or rooms that are too hot or too cold. They don’t think about where the air is going or where it is leaking out of the building envelope, but are only focused on their equipment instead. If you have some rooms that aren’t comfortable, you tend to stay out of them for the summer or winter. We can fix it so you can use your whole house all the time.

Why Experience Matters

Mastery Takes Time.

Time to learn and apply knowledge and get lots of experience. Time shows you the mistakes you made and what the results are. If you care, you correct and adjust what you are doing to get better results in the future.

If a company started two years ago, what is the most experience any employee can have? Two years. There is a lot they don’t really know.

If a company started 15 years ago but has high employee turnover, and the longest anyone has been there is a couple of years, with most people being brand new, then it’s not really a company with 15 years of experience. Because a company IS the team. If team members view it as just a job until they can get a better one and are not fully engaged, they will perform as rookies.

One thing I am very proud of at my company is that we keep people for a very long time. People can see a future here and commit. They want to get better and try harder. They are recognized and rewarded for great performance in service to our customers. We have great leaders to lead them. That’s my job – build more leaders.

One of the great joys in my life is seeing people each day who have been here for a very long time. It’s like family. We have a high-trust environment and it allows low-friction progress and improvement. I love my employees and am grateful for their trust in my leadership. It’s an honor for someone to dedicate their working life to coming here and doing what we do each day – fixing the problems at your home.

In 2018, After Being In Business For 31 Years And Persistently Growing Out Of Our Physical Space, I Decided It Was Time To Do Something Bold For My Team At Connecticut Basement Systems.

We had fixed and were responsible for the work we had done in over 70,000 homes in Connecticut and Westchester and Putnam counties, and our reputation was only bringing us more and more customers each year.

“What do the people that call us really want?”

At the time, the basement waterproofing industry, a small, loose collection of “professionals” was focused on fixing leaks, and they didn’t do a great job of it. But fixing leaks wasn’t getting people to where they wanted to be with their homes.

After meeting with homeowners every day for some years, I found that what they really wanted was “dry usable space”. That meant fixing leaks, yes - but there was more to it. People want basement space that doesn’t leak when it rains hard, when the power goes out or when a pump fails. They also want basement space where mold doesn’t grow and that doesn’t smell “musty”. Musty odors are from mold.

So, in order to do that we need to keep the relative humidity down below 60% so mold doesn’t grow. In order to do that, we need high-performance dehumidification.

A simplified explanation is this. In the summer when the outdoor temperature is higher than the basement temperature you need dehumidification. This is because when that warm humid summer air comes into the basement it is cooled to the basement temperature. When you cool the air, the relative humidity goes up. So even if you do not have a leak, mold can grow at Relative Humidity levels of over 70%.

Relative Humidity means how full of water the air is compared to the maximum amount it can hold at that temperature. Warm air holds a lot more water vapor than cold air does.

Regular household dehumidifiers do not perform well enough in a basement to ensure the RH is low enough on the hottest days of the year.

This is because they are built for warmer environments. Cool spaces like basements and crawl spaces need a machine that is built for the cool temperature they need to perform in.

Foundation Push Piers in Meriden, CT

Once a solution was written up and work was proposed it would be time for one of our foundation crews to get to work. This team consisted of our Foreman, Sergio Alves, and Jacob Scott. To install the push piers, a trench must be dug alongside the foundation in the back of the house. Once that was done, it would be time to begin push pier installation. These go below the foundation's footing and are then steel pier sections that are hydraulically driven into the ground until they reach stable soil. Then the team would raise the foundation to ensure the house is no longer sagging and the cracks come together, but this is done slowly and carefully. This is done using the hydraulic pressure. Slowly you could see the large crack closing up. Once the homeowner and Sergio were satisfied with the stabilization of the foundation, the cracks were sealed on the outside and finally, it was time to backfill with soil. On the inside, the cracks were closed up, but sealed and waterproofed, and then our crew installed CarbonArmor strips to strengthen and help stabilize the wall. Overall, this was a very large project, but the homeowner was very happy with the results, seeing her foundation was in great shape!

_{I am Larry Janesky, founder and owner of Connecticut Basement Systems, the “All Things Basementy” company in Seymour CT. Many people are confused about what happened to a company that sounds like us, but isn’t, and this letter will hopefully clear things up.}

_{I started Connecticut Basement Systems in 1987 and took on a partner, Steve Senkowicz. At the time we offered radon services and basement waterproofing. After a few years it became apparent that we had much different philosophies and we decided to split the company in 1994 - 28 years ago. Steve would take the radon services and I agreed never to offer radon services. I took the basement waterproofing part of it.}

_{When we split, neither of us wanted to change our name since people knew us. So I kept the Connecticut Basement Systems name and Steve stuck the word Radon onto it for his new company, and we carried on.}

_{Fast forward 28 years to 2022. Our company moved to Seymour in 1997 and has grown dramatically. We have 250 employees and offer waterproofing, crawl space repair, foundation repair, basement finishing, and air sealing and insulation services. We built a brand new 77,000 square foot building for our team to provide excellent service to our customers deep into the future. We have had the same phone number for 35 years and have never failed to answer it promptly and be there 100% for the public, the community and our customers.}

_{Meanwhile, Connecticut Basement Systems Radon rents a small building in Stratford, and has 20 employees doing radon work and well water treatment. There is a dramatic difference between us.}

_{In late October of 2022, Steve Senkowicz died suddenly. The family does not want anything to do with the business and turned it over to their attorney. This is the wrong thing to do in my opinion. The paychecks for the 20 employees did not clear that week. Their staff did not know what to do and no one offered any solutions. So they went home and stopped answering the phones.}

_{At the time they had jobs sold that they had taken deposits for, and many service appointments scheduled. I offered to step in and help even though it is not my company, but the attorneys instructed us not to, even when I made a plea to do the right thing by customers.}

Connecticut Basement Systems Helps Seymour Achieve a Socially Distant School Year

Seymour, CT - The new school year looked a little different for Seymour Middle School students due to Covid-19. Dates and deadlines were up in the air for many when it came to reopening. With distance learning, as well as in-class learning in place, Seymour Middle School needed to ensure that students would be safe once they arrived back after summer.

For starters, all art supplies could no longer be shared. Jodie Roden, the school’s principal, informed the company by email that art supplies are usually shared among students each year, but Covid-19 put a stop to that. In a time of such uncertainty, Connecticut Basement Systems was certain of one thing: the company wanted to help.

Connecticut Basement Systems recruited Contractor Nation to assist with a Back to School Drive that collected supplies for the middle schoolers. Donation boxes were placed in the Marketing Department, as well as the front lobby of buildings 1 and 3 of our corporate campus.

With the help of Marketing Coordinator, Leslie Pizzagalli, and Contractor Nation’s Marketing Project Manager, Kaitlyn Macisco, these two teams were able to donate nearly a dozen tote bags and backpacks filled with school supplies to Jodie’s 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

Donations were dropped off to Seymour Middle School on September 3rd, the same day that Superintendent Michael Wilson was operating the school’s “Thermometer Drive” -- a grab and go table that allowed Seymour families to take a free thermometer without having to leave their vehicle. Just another step to ensure students would stay safe.

With the first day of class pushed after the holiday, students would start on Tuesday, September 9th, and the donations on Thursday afternoon would allow Jodie and the vice principal time to separate all the supplies, taking all the proper sanitary measures into account.

Waterproofing in Milford, CT

The solution our team came up with was to install a proper sump pump within the basement and also a proper drainage system. With these systems working together properly, any amount of basement water can be dealt with and disallow any future water-related issues for this basement. Our crew decided to install a Triple Safe sump pump. Since the foundation of the basement is a type of two-piece construction, known as monolithic, the drainage system that would work best under these circumstances is a DryTrak drainage system.

It is known that the area most water accumulates in a basement is the perimeter, where the walls meet the floor. With this knowledge, our crew knew that a DryTrak waterproofing system needed to be installed in this basement. This system works by collecting outside water around the perimeter of the basement that is flowing downwards before it can reach the basement floor. Once the water is collected in this system, it is then paired with a sump pump in order to move the water elsewhere. The sump pump that was installed in this basement was the TripleSafe pump that is one of the best sump pumps available to anyone around the world. This pump has a pump that runs off of battery power in case the house loses electricity for any reason which can be a massive help and is an incredibly intelligent aspect of this pump. This sump pump is attached to the DryTrak system and pumps the collected water from the basement perimeter through discharge lines that lead outside and can be released back outside away from the house so that it cannot be absorbed by the ground and fall right back into the basement’s perimeter.

Another solution to the water issues that this homeowner faces with her new house was the installation of a TrenchDrain system located at the bottom of the basement steps. This is a drain that was installed at the base of a door that leads outside. This allows for any water coming under the door or being brought in from the outside to fall into a grated trench which is integrated into the DryTrak system. With this installation, there were now no ways for outside water to seep into the basement floor. In order to distribute all the water collected whether it be by the DryTrak system or the TrenchDrain, the Triplesafe sump pump would now be able to pump water through a discharge line that was installed into the homeowner’s lawn and was finally released by a LawnScape outlet. The LawnScape is a grated outlet where the unwanted water from the basement exits from and due to its grated design, it disallows any small creatures, leaves, or other small form of debris to enter the drainage lines and clog the system.

With the expertise of our crew, led by our foreman Marcio Bahiense, this homeowner was now allowed to be worry-free of potential water issues in her basement for years to come. Our excellent solutions, the Triplesafe sump pump, DryTrak drainage system, TrenchDrain, and LawnScape outlet were all implemented to work symbiotically in order to deter unwanted water from entering this basement. Thanks to our crew’s excellent haste, hard work, and determination, this Milford basement was now unable to be affected by unwanted water.

Everlast Windows and SunHouse sills Installation in Danbury, CT

Although there are plenty of types of windows to choose from nowadays, our company offers some of the most advanced basement windows in terms of efficiency, design, and overall attractiveness. These are window wells that are installed on the exterior of the house that exist for the purpose of keeping basement windows clean as well as allowing more natural light into a basement. The wells are made from durable, high-strength plastic that will never rust, deteriorate or require painting. The light color of the well and the curved design are used to direct more sunlight into the basement. Often, plastic coverings are put on these wells in order to keep any debris from getting onto or near the windows. Once these were installed around the exterior of the basement windows, the basement was instantly brighter and was also able to raise the overall temperature of the basement.

With the combination of EverLast windows and SunHouse window well installed in the place of the homeowner’s four original, disheveled windows, it was clear that this basement was now much better off. The Danbury homeowner no longer had to worry about drafts or looking out the windows to see dirt and debris. With professional leadership and assistance in installing these windows, our foreman Chavon Bowman was able to greatly improve the look and feel of this basement. With the help of our crew, this homeowner was left with wonderful windows and a smile on her face from our professional and timely service.

Complete Waterproofing in Greenwich, CT

To begin, our crew had the WaterGuard system installed. This system is put around the perimeter of the basement floors and will collect any water that comes from the ground underneath. The collected water is then filtered into the Triple Safe sump pump, which is an extremely reliable piece of equipment that deters water issues in basements with no problem. The way this specific sump pump works is that it has three pumps that automatically transitions to the proper pump to use at the time. One of the pumps is battery-operated which the system will use if there is a power outage. The other pumps work to take the water collected by the WaterGuard system and pumped away from the house through a drainage line and comes out of a LawnScape grate. This grate is designed to have any unwanted liquids come out of it while also not allowing any small animals, leaves or other small objects to get into the drainage line. After the waterproofing was finished, the homeowner wanted the to have the basement finished to create his ideal basement. After discussing with the homeowner, it was decided that our crew would design the basement to have a washer and dryer room, two closets, a kitchen, pantry, furnace room, and a bathroom. This design was going to involve many of our Total Basement Finishing products, but our crew was able to complete the basement as quickly as possible. As a start, we installed Everlast walls along the perimeter of the whole basement, as well as walls to create rooms for closets and the bathroom. These walls are perfect for any basement as they are easy to install while also not using wood or metal frames or studs which could rot or rust depending on the material. Once walls were put up, our crew installed a ThermalDry tile flooring. The original carpet flooring had to be torn out after years of water issues affecting its smell, coloration, and overall quality. This kind of flooring has specific airspace within the tiles that allow water vapors to stay and eventually dry out while also creating a thermal break to keep floors 8-10 degrees warmer than the usual concrete flooring in basements.

With the walls and flooring complete, 3 doors with new framing were implemented; 1 for the bathroom, one for the closet, and one exterior door that leads to the staircase. All that was left was to install the full bathroom, as well as all electrical components, including a smoke detector and 20 switches, outlets, or jacks. Once the bathroom had all its elements installed and the electrical system was complete, this homeowner was able to see his brand-new basement and the exceptional work done by our crew.

The foreman of this project was Tibor Mrmus and he and his crew was able to transform a once damp and dreary basement into dry and lovely living space in an organized and timely manner. It is safe to say the homeowner was more than pleased with his new basement and it could not have happened if not for our exceptional staff.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Seymour Pink Day, Connecticut Basement Systems and Dr. Energy Saver of CT is executing a social media campaign in the month of October. The goal of the campaign is to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Connecticut Basement Systems Participates in the Back to School Drive

As members of the Corporate Volunteer Council, Connecticut Basement Systems participated in the annual Back to School Drive. We sponsored two children from the Ansonia elementary schools that are below the poverty line and provided them with all the necessary supplies to start the new school year right.

The Corporate Volunteer Council organizes this event by providing each company who participates a check list of supplies needed for each child. Then as a company, we need to organize and collect these supplies for them. With the help from our friends at Contractor Nation and the Treehouse, we were able to collect everything on the list and more. We were astonished with all the donations that came pouring in for the support of these two girls.

All the supplies were organized into bins for these two girls. All extra supplies were placed in a separate bin for the Nurse’s Closet, where they will be distributed throughout the school year.

On August 22, 2018, members of Connecticut Basement Systems, Contractor Nation and the Treehouse gathered at Mead Elementary School to witness our sponsor kids open up their bins filled with brand new school supplies.

The entire gymnasium was overwhelmed with joy watching all of these kids open up their bins. It was an up lifting experience that collectively as a team we all could experience. The team effort put forth by Connecticut Basement Systems, Contractor Nation and the Treehouse resulted in getting these two girl the ability to start the new school year right.

SmartJacks in Yorktown Heights, NY

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Brad Glazer arrived at the home to assess the situation. He assured the homeowners that there was a permanent solution to solve their sagging floors with our SmartJack System. SmartJacks are the only solution that address problem soils and stabilize the area. After discussing the solution in great detail, the homeowners decided to follow through with the project.

On the day of installation, Foreman Victor Alves arrived to the home to install the SmartJacks. After reviewing the locations for each SmartJack, the process began with excavation of a 2 inch square deep hole at each location. The holes will be filled of tightly compacted crushed stone. Next, a pre-cast concrete footing is placed on top of the crushed stone and carefully leveled. Then, measurements are made for the jack posts and are cut to the correct length. Each SmartJack is manufactured with a triple-layer, in-line galvanized coating. This triple-layer coating process includes:

A uniform hot-dip zinc galvanizing layer
An intermediate conversion coating enhances corrosion resistance
A clear, organic top coating to further enhance appearance and durability.

The manufacturing of the SmartJacks are what makes our product unique and the best for sagging floors. These jacks can support vertical loads exceeding 60,000 pounds! Lastly, each jack is assembled in the space and is mounted against the girder. Once this is completed, the foundation is stabilized!

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Chuck Stofko arrived at the home to inspect the wall crack. Upon inspection, he instantly knew that this problem could be solved with our FlexiSpan system. Chuck explained in great detail how this product would solve the problem. On the day of production, Foreman Justin Vizard arrived at the home to install the FlexiSpan system. The process follows accordingly…

Step 1: Justin applied a flexible sealant along the full length of the crack.

Step 2: A strip of flexible and porous foam is installed over the crack.

Step 3: Lastly, an impermeable membrane is adhered to the wall on both sides of the foam strip. This is a fail-safe treatment that will allow any future seepage of water through the crack to move discreetly down the wall into the basement’s drainage system.

This system is a permanent solution and will solve all the concerns. Unlike other “quick fixes” such as applying masonry sealant or patching the crack with mortar. These methods are not likely to fix the problem because any slight movement along the crack can break the seal.

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Rick Raucci arrived at the home to inspect the crawl space. The crawl space was supporting mold growth since it was drafty and damp which was caused by cracks and holes in the floors and walls. After his inspection, he talked to the homeowner identifying problematic areas in the crawl space. The first to be addressed were the floors and walls of the crawl space that were allowing unwanted moisture and air to enter which would create a damp and drafty environment. By keeping the crawl space dry, it will protect the structure from mold or rot. On the day of the service appointment, the Service Tech arrived at the home and immediately spoke to the homeowner. They explained the entire procedure that is included in an annual maintenance and once the homeowner was informed, he went to the basement to inspect the system. This particular basement had our full perimeter WaterGuard system and a TripleSafe Sump Pump. After inspecting the TripleSafe and they immediately recognized a problem, there was no power to the system. They then looked at the circuit breaker and realized that a breaker had been tripped which caused there to be no power to the system. Clearly, that is not a good sign. They then opened up the TripleSafe sump pump and instantly knew what had happened. The entire basin was clogged with iron. With all of this iron build-up, it clogged the breathing hole of the primary pump which ultimately obstructed the pump. Since the primary pump had failed due to the iron, the secondary pump took over and was still discharging the water away from the home. This is a great benefit of the TripleSafe in scenarios like this one. Even if the primary pump fails, there is still a secondary pump and a battery backup that will keep your basement dry all year long.

The first step to servicing this sump pump was to clear the iron from the system as best as possible. Not only did they get the iron build-up out, but they also scrubbed all of the other parts of the system, removing any discoloration or stains. Once the iron was removed, the service tech had to replace the primary pump with a new one and then replace the battery. Once the sump pump was iron-free and the parts were replaced, they checked the water flow from the WaterGuard System to the TripleSafe just to make sure that the system was working correctly, which it was. Normally, a service appointment includes cleaning out the basin and checking to make sure all breathing holes and parts are clear and working properly. Since this sump pump was not serviced in over a year, parts needed to be replaced.

The Service Tech recommended to the homeowner that his TripleSafe sump pump should have a maintenance done every six months due to the iron build up so the system can run properly through the whole year and especially through the heavy rains!

Once the Service Tech completed the service appointment, the system was left in pristine condition and was running perfectly!

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Glen Knafel arrived at the home to inspect the problematic area. He concluded that the bottom of the wood panels were damaged with mold that was caused by moisture. The moisture was caused by unwanted water entering the basement. The next thing he noticed that there was air leakage that was caused by the lack of insulation in the basement. Lastly, he addressed the musty odor in the area that was caused by the humidity in the air. After discussing the problems in the basement with the homeowner, they agreed on a solution that would best fit his needs and scheduled for an installation date.

On installation day, Justin Vizard arrived at the home prepared to install the products. In order to fix the crack in the wall, Justin installed a FlexiSpan system. The FlexiSpan will stop water from leaking through the crack while sealing the crack. This system is a 3-step process to install. It first begins with the application of flexible sealant along the full length of the crack. Next, a strip of foam is installed over the crack. Lastly, a waterproof film is attached to the wall on both sides of the foam strip. This system will allow any future seepage of water through the crack to discreetly flow down to the basement’s main drainage system.

Rim Joist Insulation was also installed to prevent any air leakage from entering the basement. With this insulation, the home will be more energy efficient. The last product that Justin installed was the SaniDry Sedona. From Thanksgiving until the week before Christmas, we’ll be collecting new, unwrapped toys that will be distributed to needy children in the Lower Naugatuck Valley. The program has been in operation for over 20 years and supplies toys to over 1,000 children each Christmas.
